We invite you to review the following information concerning the accomplishments of the Association
de prévention de dégâts d’eau du Québec (PREVDEQ) and encourage you to become an active
member and support our efforts in reducing the risks associated with water damages.
Founded in August 2017, PREVDEQ has made a name for itself, through its numerous achievements,
with several stakeholders in this new field. Its achievements include:
- the establishment of membership criteria for members installing water damage prevention
systems, such as the obligation to hold a licence and a performance bond issued by the Régie
du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) as well as liability insurance and a commitment to respect a
code of ethics and sound business practices; - the development of minimum quality standards for the products offered by member
manufacturers and the appointment of an independent testing laboratory that can confirm
compliance with such standards; - the creation of committees working in various sectors to promote water damage prevention,
namely:a training committee: Development of a training program in partnership with the Association
des professionnels de la construction et de l’habitation du Québec (APCHQ) aimed at
specialized firms, property and casualty insurance brokers as well as the general public; - a government relations committee: Representation with the authorities responsible for
drafting the Building Code to promote the integration of water damage prevention systems
within new constructions; - a prevention committee: Consolidation of stakeholders’ recommendations in order to develop
a single water damage prevention guide; - a working table with property and casualty insurers: Dissemination of our work to property
and casualty insurers and gathering of their feedback to contribute to the development of our
interventions and approaches.
In response to PREVDEQ’s many breakthroughs, certain property and casualty insurers have
expressed a desire to see the structure and rigour imposed by PREVDEQ on its member installers and
member manufacturers applied to other parts of Canada.
To this end, we have created the Water Damage Prevention Association of Canada (PREVCAN) to
assist interested stakeholders in other provinces in creating their own provincial associations and
replicate PREVDEQ’s achievements in their respective regions. These new provincial associations will
become chapters of PREVCAN. PREVCAN’s mission and objectives are described in the attached
document.
The Water Damage Prevention Alliance of Ontario (WDPAO) has already been created with the
support of PREVDEQ and its executive team. It is reasonable to expect that this process will accelerate to enable the founding of provincial chapters throughout Canada.
In addition, PREVCAN will be called upon to oversee the product certification process, which is
currently being developed by PREVDEQ. This process will provide Canada’s property and casualty
insurance companies with an effective product certification service, thereby relieving them of the
burden and responsibility associated with assessing various products’ characteristics and performance
in the marketplace from a technical standpoint. Certain insurers have acknowledged that this
responsibility placed a heavy burden on their resources and exposed them to risks if the
recommended products did not meet consumers’ expectations.
We are convinced that it would be in our mutual best interest if you chose to become a member.
Together, we can have a very positive impact on reducing the financial, human and environmental
costs associated with water damages. Please feel free to contact me if you would like additional
information about our activities or on how to become a member.
